Review of the Current State and Future Demand of Medical Physics Workforce

Erli Chen, MS, Wayne Newhauser, PhD, Dustin Gress, MS

The medical physics profession is a recognized, established, and mature workforce that is undergoing growth and change driven by scientific, technical, and medical advances. In this session we will review the size and general characteristics of the medical physics profession related to the Diagnostic and Therapy Medical Physics workforce and the national radiation professional workforce. Presenting 2020 diagnostic and therapy workforce survey results and discuss the factors that are driving the current and future demands and supply issues in the supply pathways for Diagnostic and Therapy Physicists. Participants will understand the current state of knowledge of the medical physics workforce, including uncertainties and gaps in knowledge. Authors will discuss the key workforce-related challenges facing the medical physics profession in the next decade. Presentations will examine supply and demand of qualified medical physicists for Diagnostic and Therapy Physicists. Presenters will summarize major challenges and opportunities to meet the profession’s future needs, strategies and tactics. This information may be used to maintain an adequate and well-trained Medical Physics Workforce.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the General Characteristics of the medical physics profession.
2. Understand current state of the Diagnostic and Therapy Physics Workforce
3. Review Current and Future Issues in the Supply Pathways for Diagnostic and Therapy Physicists.
4. Discuss Projections of Demand and Supply for Diagnostic and Therapy Physicists.
5. Summarize major challenges, opportunities, strategies and tactics to maintain an Adequate and
Well-Trained Medical Physics Workforce.
