Biophotonics in Radiation and Photodynamic Therapy - Therapeutic delivery can be enhanced by the synergy between non-ionizing and ionizing photons, where light-radiation interactions can inform about dose or amplify the clinical therapeutic value. In radiation therapy (RT), emerging trends include optical surface imaging, 3D Gel and water tank imaging, Scintillator detectors, and utilization of the interaction by scintillation or Cherenkov light to serve as molecular intermediates for imaging. In photodynamic therapy (PDT), emerging trends include direct measurements of light fluence, photosensitizer (PS) concentration, tissue oxygen concentration, blood flow, and their combinations leading to reactive oxygen species explicit dosimetry.

Computational Imaging: from X-ray Tomography to Biophotonics - Computational solution of inverse problems plays a critical role in a wide range of biomedical imaging modalities, ranging from human scale computed tomography to microscopic fluorescence tomography. In this overview, we will review common themes found across all these scales and give examples of algorithmic cross-fertilization between modalities. We will draw on examples from computed tomography, light-sheet microscopy, and hybrid x-ray/optical modalities.

Biophotonics Research Programs and Funding Opportunities at NIBIB - The NIBIB mission is to improve health by leading the development and accelerating the application of biomedical technologies. The Institute is committed to integrating the physical and engineering sciences with the life sciences to advance basic biomedical research and medical care. This presentation will provide an overview of the scientific programs and funding opportunities supported by NIBIB, highlighting the program priorities with the areas of particular importance to the field of Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy. Selected research awards with their potential clinical impacts and the National Centers for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NCBIB) in biphotonic will be highlighted.
