There have been many professional sessions at previous Annual and Spring Clinical meetings related to finding a job. One topic that has not been previously covered in depth is the important job-related topic of professional letters of reference. The PROFS Committee aims to host a session covering a broad range of topics relating to letters of reference. This will be coupled with an AAPM Newsletter Series of articles.

A letter of reference or recommendation letter is used to provide information about the candidate from an outside source, providing details about skills and qualifications, sometimes giving a personal perspective of the candidate, and listing achievements. As Medical Physicists, we find ourselves needing letters of reference for new jobs, promotions, and awards but also needing to write them for colleagues, students, and residents. The goal of this session is to detail the differences and similarities in types of professional letters, because whether you are asking someone to write a letter of reference for you or writing a letter for some else, it can be helpful to understand the difference types and perspectives of professional reference letters.
