SU-EF-TRACK 2-0 (Sunday, 7/25/2021) 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM [Eastern Time (GMT-4)]

A number of non-Anger planar and SPECT gamma cameras (pixelated, solid state, multiple small field-of-view), including those dedicated to myocardial perfusion and molecular breast imaging, are now commercially available, and their clinical use is becoming common. As a consequence, the likelihood that a nuclear and diagnostic medical physicist will encounter these non-traditional cameras in clinical practice is increasing. The underlying physics, performance characteristics, calibration and quality control, and annual evaluation of these cameras differ substantially from those of the conventional Anger camera. Secondly, due to their unique construction and purpose, the collection of conventional phantom data for accreditation present several problems that are not trivial to overcome. The purpose of this session is to provide attendees with information related to the underlying physics, calibrations, quality control and performance characteristics of various classes of non-Anger gamma cameras; as well as, appropriate accreditation tests.

Dedicated myocardial perfusion imagers (Piotr Slomka, PhD)
This lecture will describe solid state detector performance, collimator design and characteristics, dedicated quality control, and new types of artifacts and evaluation in the clinical practice, associated with dedicated cardiac non-Anger SPECT cameras.

Large field-of-view pixelated gamma cameras (Leonard W. Zimmermann, MS)
This lecture will focus on non-Anger large field-of-view gamma camera detector and collimator characteristics, system calibration and commissioning, and annual performance evaluation.

New and innovative CZT-based gamma cameras (Michael K. O'Connor, PhD)
This lecture will describe molecular breast imaging (MBI) and next-generation Ring gantry CZT-based systems, as well as, acceptance testing and ACR accreditation associated with both of those classes of non-Anger gamma cameras.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the underlying physical principles of the various types of non-Anger gamma cameras
2. Become familiar with non-Anger gamma camera calibrations and quality control
3. Learn about non-Anger gamma camera performance characteristics and how to evaluate them to satisfy accreditation groups
