MO-A-TRACK 3-0 (Monday, 7/26/2021) 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM [Eastern Time (GMT-4)]

Microscopic Biophotonics - One major objective of microscopic biophotonics technologies is to enable in vivo, in situ, and noninvasive or minimally invasive optical histology. This presentation will focus on the recent developments of two representative microscopic biophotonics technologies: optical coherence tomography and multiphoton endomicroscopy. These technologies are capable of imaging tissue microanatomy at a resolution from a few microns to the submicron level in real time and without the need for tissue removal, staining or processing. The basic physics principles, engineering challenges and solutions will be discussed. The performance of these imaging technologies for in vivo animal models, ex vivo human tissues, and translational in vivo human subject imaging will be presented.

Macroscopic Biophotonics – The major objective of macroscopic biophotonic technologies it to enable human physiological or pathophysiological study or clinical assessment. The presentation will focus on both research based and clinical tools for imaging tissue, guiding procedures, and measuring tissue function. Examples will be illustrated from endoscopy, surgery and radiation therapy, where innovations in procedure guidance are changing how delivery of care is achieved. More basic instruments that are portable, mobile or even implantable, make use of low cost innovations in light sources and detectors. The economic footprint of macroscopic optics is perhaps the largest single technology sector in medicine today.

Learning Objectives:
1. To learn about the recent developments and translational potential of microscopic biophotonics imaging technologies.
2. To learn about existing and emerging tools in surgical guidance, endoscopy, and radiation therapy as examples of medium to high cost macroscopic optical systems.
