CINE Viewer in Eclipse for Tumor Motion Evaluation in MRgRT

Purpose: 4D MRI has been limitedly utilized in clinic unlike 4D CT for tumor motion evaluation. In contrast, 2D CINE MRI has been actively used in MRgRT through MRI vendors’ display tools, resulting in limited access from Radiation Oncology practice. In the study, we investigated the feasibility of utilizing CINE MRI through a treatment planning system.

Methods: We developed CINE viewer in Eclipse using Varian Eclipse Scripting Application Programming Interface (ESAPI). It consisted of 1) single/orthogonal viewer, 2) display controller,s and 3) measurement tools for tumor motion evaluation.

Results: In Eclipse, CINE viewer loaded 1) CINE MRIs from 1.5T Philips Ingenia MRI which were DICOM imported to Eclipse database and 2) CINE MRIs from ViewRay 0.35T MR-LINAC which were saved to a local database from ViewRay TPS as a movie file. CINE viewer handled two display modes (single plane or orthogonal planes) depending on acquisition planes. Multiple measuring markers were placed on tumor at various respiratory phases, which provided tumor motion ranges in x-, y-axis of CINE images among the respiratory phases.

Conclusion: We demonstrated the clinical feasibility of tumor motion evaluation using CINE viewer in Eclipse for MRI simulation and MRgRT review. The proposed approach streamlines tumor motion evaluation using CINE MRI using Eclipse in MRgRT procedures.
