Purpose: The majority of the automatic error detection studies are focused on photon radiation therapy. Few have been reported in the proton community. The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a framework for automating aspects of the initial physics plan check for passive scattering and pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton radiotherapy, with the overall goal of improving workflow efficiency and increasing error detection.
Methods: A RayStation script, Auto-IniCheck, was developed based on a set of comprehensive checklists designed to standardize the initial physics plan check and incorporate recommendations from AAPM's TG-275 report. The checklists are categorized by treatment site and proton modality. Specific items are characterized into beam set independent and dependent groups. The former includes items related to patient assessment and data management; the latter contains items related to patient modeling, plan design, optimization, and evaluation. Each item that could be automated was included in Auto-IniCheck. Items that could not be automated are highlighted for manual review. The results are summarized in a PDF report displayed to the user.
Results: 75%-80% of checklisted items could be automated. The script takes less than 15 seconds to run and drastically decreases the amount of time needed to check each item. Additionally, Auto-IniCheck enables the detection of specific errors that would not have been readily apparent through manual reviews, such as validating the isocenter coordinates truncated to one decimal place or that PTV margins match institutional protocols.
Conclusion: A new script, Auto-IniCheck, was developed to automate several aspects of the initial physics check for passive scattering and PBS proton plans. By improving the efficiency of the review and the visibility of specific errors, the system enhances the plan check. It allows the reviewer more time to focus on critical areas such as plan quality and clinical decision making.
