Purpose: To evaluate MIM Symphony treatment planning system for PPSI planning.

Methods: PPSI planning procedure was evaluated and compared between MIM Symphony and Varian VariSeed on five patients, including image import, contour, seed placement/identification, dose calculation, plan evaluation, and plan printout documentation.

Results: MIM Symphony is an add-on function of MIM software, and it is compatible with all other MIM functions. We believe this module could petentially improve workflow for PPSI planning, especially for patients boosted with extenal beam radiation. It is also possible to generate cumulative EBRT and brachytherapy equivalent dose and contour sharing. In MIM, the imported PPSI CT images can be fused to MRI, PSI ultrasound, and other external beam planning CTs. Contouring can be efficently performed based on various contrasts provided by different image modalities and within one module. MIM Symphony seed auto-identification function is comparable with the widely used VariSeed planning system. The seed auto-identification parameters can be constructed in MIM Symphony and adjusted for individual PPSI plans, including seed intensity threshold, PTV/CTV margins for seed search, and seed size upper and lower limits. The dose calculation algorithms for MIM Symphony and other commercially available LDR treatment planning systems are identical, which is based on AAPM TG-43. Dose constraints for target and organs-at-risk can be incorporated to standardize plan evaluation. The plan printout document of MIM Symphony can be customized to fit each clinics’ individual requirements, and templates can be generated.

Conclusion: Our initial tests have shown that MIM Symphony for PPSI is comparable to other LDR treatment planning systems, and has the extra advantages of ease of contouring, contour sharing and equivalent dose accumulation. We believe it has the potential for more streamline workflow and therefore improving PPSI process efficiency.
