MRI is an advanced diagnostic imaging modality enabling clinicians to visualize tissue properties and pathology by altering MRI acquisition and reconstruction parameters. This presentation will provide a general overview of MRI protocols and options for adjusting MR imaging parameters to control tissue contrast.

As MRI continues to expand in clinical applications, including those outside of traditional diagnostic imaging, the needs of clinicians often require development of new or modification of existing protocols to accommodate advances in the field. Development of these protocols draws on experience and clinical exposure as well as a close working relationship with the clinicians. This presentation will provide a collection of case studies to illustrate an approach to advanced protocol development for physicists.

Cutting edge MRI techniques provide the opportunity to enhance clinical protocols to meet ever more demanding clinical needs. Physicists can be key to helping implement and troubleshoot these new and emerging technologies in a clinical setting so as to maximize patient access and benefit. This presentation will review emerging MRI technologies and their clinical use.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the basics of MRI protocols.
2. Review general principles of MR sequences for assessment of the contrast between the tissues.
3. Develop methods for adapting clinical protocols to clinicians’ needs.
4. Describe emerging technologies and their clinical use.
