Medical physicists are uniquely positioned to address patient questions and concerns about safety and technical aspects of radiation therapy and diagnostic imaging. A physicists’ ability to communicate effectively can increase patient confidence in the quality of their care, the facility, and their healthcare providers. Addressing patients’ concerns can substantially decrease patient anxiety and improve overall patient outcomes. This session will provide attendees with guidance about how to make physicist-patient interactions a positive and useful experience for patients. The speakers will provide examples of both positive and negative patient interactions, the effect of body language and environment, and the effect of differences in cultural backgrounds.
Learning Objectives:
1. Learn about the role that medical physicists have in patient interactions.
2. Understand how to communicate effectively with patients.
3. Understand how the impact – both positive and negative – of the words and phrasing medical physicists use with patients.
4. Learn how cultural differences among patients can affect patients’ perspective of their treatment, imaging exam, or interactions with healthcare providers.
