This session brings together several experts to provide attendees with current perspectives about health policy, as well as legislative and regulatory developments, that may impact medical physicists.

Mr. Reiter will provide an overview of the current political environment in Congress and its potential impact on legislation impacting clinical medical physics practice, research programming and funding, medical use of radiation, and health policy. In addition, he will prognosticate about the midterm election year dynamics and how they may impact health policy going forward. Mr. Reiter will address potential challenges and opportunities for advancing ongoing and new AAPM advocacy initiatives within the federal legislative environment.

Mr. Martin will speak about current and trending issues that are important to AAPM’s advocacy in Congress and state legislatures, as well as in federal and state agencies, including the practice of medical physicists, radiation safety, research-related initiatives, and medical physicist licensure. In addition, Mr. Martin will discuss the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) activities, including those related to the NRC’s re-evaluation of Training and Experience requirements for Authorized Users (AUs) and those addressing medical event reporting for extravasations. Mr. Martin will talk about the work AAPM government relations is doing on these issues and where these activities fit within AAPM’s advocacy priorities.
