Developing a compelling research grant application may seem like a formidable task even for experienced scientists. For early career AAPM members embarking on writing a grant for the first time, the grant writing and review process can be an especially challenging experience. Furthermore, even though there are grantsmanship training resources at most major academic centers, these programs cater largely to basic sciences and may not be tailored to medical physicists. It may be challenging to contextualize and apply these strategies to research grants in the areas of therapeutic and/or imaging medical physics.
The AAPM Grant Funding Symposium attempts to address this unmet need. The session will commence with insights from NIH Program Officers on grant funding opportunities relevant to AAPM members and an overview of the nuts and bolts of getting your research funded by NIH. Subsequently, AAPM members who are successfully funded and serve as grant reviewers on NIH Study Sections will share their experiences and grant-writing tips in the areas of imaging, therapy, and multidisciplinary medical physics. Topics will include domain-specific grantsmanship tips, common mistakes made by PIs during initial submissions and resubmissions, forming multidisciplinary collaborations, and how to manage your project post-award. The session will conclude with ample time for a moderated panel discussion where our experts will answer questions from audience members.
