This session covers high-priority topics related to imaging disparities in the United States. Access to high-quality imaging, screening services, advanced imaging modalities, and reliable image interpretation is not always guaranteed. The speakers will highlight discrepancies in access to and quality of various imaging exams and safety procedures across different racial and socioeconomic groups. They will also delve into discrepancies seen in rural as well as urban environments. Barriers to equitable imaging can result in delayed diagnoses, unsafe imaging practices, error-prone image interpretation, and delayed treatment for certain populations.
The speakers will discuss challenges faced in working towards health equity and potential methods to overcome these challenges. The speakers will address the topic of imaging disparities from the perspective of medical physicists, physicians, technologists, and patients. They will highlight research being conducted on the topic of imaging disparities as well as share their personal work and volunteer experience.
While many medical physicists may feel removed from being in a position to address imaging disparities, there are opportunities for physicists to work towards advancing health equity. These opportunities can exist within individual institutions as well as at the regional and national level.
