Technology advancements in radiotherapy imaging and treatment delivery have resulted in the implementation of adaptive radiotherapy (ART), where treatment plans are re-optimized to adapt to anatomy changes, either in an offline or online manner. ART provides several advantages, including a reduction of dose to healthy tissues and a consistency of dose to the target volumes, as well as the possibility for margin reductions. There is clinical evidence supporting the use of ART, and, therefore, clinics strive to implement, often with limited additional resources. ART poses some challenges, including the added effort needed for planning re-optimization, added imaging, and real-time planning for online ART, but has also demonstrated clinical successes. In this session we will introduce the evidence supporting ART, current efforts and programs for offline and online ART in linacs with conventional kV imaging, but also with MR imaging and PET imaging.
Learning objectives:
1. To review the clinical justification for adaptive radiotherapy
2. To understand different systems available for adaptive radiotherapy
3. To explore workflows for adaptive radiotherapy in the clinic
