Development and Implementation of Interactive ELearning Content for Medical Physics Education

Purpose: To develop and implement interactive eLearning materials for Medical Physics Education.

Methods: Several LMI countries in southeast Asia and the Pacific region have a little or no access to Medical Physics education. An online survey having questions on the possible number of students taking up an on-line course, use of the course materials by the faculty, topics to be included and the need for a structured course in Radiation Oncology Physics was conducted with a few institutions in the region. While 25% of the respondents reported that they did not have adequate resources for teaching and training in Clinical Radiation Oncology Physics, it was interesting to note that an overwhelming 95% of all respondents felt that a structured online course in Clinical Radiation Oncology Physics would be very useful for teaching and learning. Based on this a structured eLearning module with interactive learning contents was developed and provided on-line with login restrictions. The eLearning materials were made available on a Moodle platform with topics such as External Beam Physics, Radiobiology, TRS 398 protocol and Radiation protection. The contents were developed in video format with audio and with assignments based on multiple choice questions for each lecture. Completing the MCQ based quizzes have been made mandatory for the student to move to the next lesson on the course. Interactive contents such as interactive videos and interactive slides were developed based on the H5P content types available with Moodle. A few interactive contents were also developed with Articulate 360.

Results: The courses have been well received by medical physics students from various countries. More than 300 students from India and abroad have registered for the courses.

Conclusion: The responses from students have been quite encouraging. Providing a structed course for interactive eLearning materials on-line has been found to be very useful.
