Evaluation of a Direct-Ion Storage Dosimeter in Personnel Radiation Dosimetry

Purpose: Traditionally, thermo-luminescent dosimeters (TLDs) have been used in most hospitals for personnel radiation dose monitoring. Direct-ion storage (DIS) dosimeters are being introduced in recent years as an alternative to TLDs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of an emerging DIS dosimeter, Instadose+, according to the IEC 1066 and 62387 standards.

Methods: Following the IEC 1066 and 62387 standards, eight Instadose+ dosimeters (Mirion Technologies) were tested under the same exposure by a GE Proteus x-ray unit for the homogeneity and collective reproducibility. Two of them were additionally exposed three times to a beam to assess the individual reproducibility. Angular response was assessed by exposing two DIS dosimeters at 0, 30, 45, and 60 degrees in the vertical plane.

Results: The Instadose+ dosimeter had a collective and individual reproducibility (Coefficient of Variation) of 3%. Homogeneity was calculated to be 11%. Deviation of dosimeter response at 30, 45, 60, -30, -45, and -60 degrees with respect to normal incidence was 3%, 1%, 1%, 1%, 8%, and 19%, respectively. Compared to the performance of to another commercially available DIS dosimeter investigated by another group, the homogeneity was improved for Instadose+ (11% vs 40%) as well as the individual and collective reproducibility (3% vs 7.5% and 12%), respectively. Additionally, Instadose+ performed comparably or better than the other dosimeter when irradiated from different angles. Instadose+ performed better at -60 degrees in the vertical plane with a 19% deviation from normal incidence versus 25% for the other dosimeter and 1% versus 12% for 60 degrees.

Conclusion: The initial results for Instadose+ pass the performance criteria for personnel dosimetry defined by the IEC 1066 and 62387 standards and show superior performance to that of another commercially available dosimeter.
