The theme of the 2022 Annual AAPM meeting is “Celebrating Medical Physics.” During the joint council symposium, we will celebrate medical physics and our contributions to the field by highlighting recent accomplishments of four of the AAPM’s councils: Education, International, Professional, and Science.
Education Council’s presentation will focus on the recently launched public education website. The website addresses topics such as what is medical physics; the history of innovation and birth of medical physics; general information about radiation and medicine; and careers/opportunities in medical physics. The website also provides an “Ask the Expert” forum that allows visitors the opportunity to engage directly with the medical physics community.
The International Council (IC) presentation will describe strategies developed for advancing the practice of medical physics globally, address disparities in healthcare and develop mitigation strategies in collaboration with other global stakeholders. IC is conducting a rigorous global needs assessment survey to gather data that will help prioritize the Council’s projects and serve as reference for measuring impact and progress.
Professional Council will introduce and present an overview of the new AAPM Mentorship Program. As stated on the program’s web page, “The goal of the AAPM Mentorship Program is to support mentorship relationships between members of the AAPM.” The program provides a mentorship matching service open to all members of the AAPM, mentoring tools and training resources and facilitates the creation of new opportunities for career development.
Science Council will discuss the Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC) initiative. MIDRC was created to address the COVID-19 pandemic through the collection and analysis of medical images, which have an essential clinical role in the diagnosis, triaging, monitoring, and management of the disease. MIDRC is a multi-society, multi-institutional, NIBIB-funded initiative that is accelerating the creation of an open, fair, and diverse medical imaging data.
